Shintora Street is the main street that connect the main stadium to the athletes' village in Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics 2020. An Argentinian contemporary artist of global repute, Leandro Erlich is perhaps best known in Japan as the creator of The Swimming Pool, a permanent installation at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. The exhibition will be the largest-ever exhibition devoted to the work of this fascinating artist. Of the approximately 40 works on display produced from 1995 to 2017, 80 percent will be making their Japanese debut.

The exhibition entitled "Wild: Untamed Mind" will start October 20th by welcoming Shinichi Nakazawa, a philosopher and anthropologist, as a director. Even in the contemporary age, which tends towards logic and reason, the perceptions of the "untamed mind" are not quite lost. Nakazawa states that those parts of our mental space which have escaped taming are ever more important. This exhibition focuses on the fascinating power of the instinctive, untamed mind of contemporary creators, unveiling how to detect the "untamed mind" through their works and archives.

The ukiyo-e master of the late Edo period, Katsushika Hokusai, is an artist renowned and loved throughout the world. This exhibition will examine several aspects of Japonisme in 6 sections with the aim of showing how particular characteristics of Hokusai's art contributed to the development of modern Western art. Some 220 works of Western art and some 40 color woodblock prints and 70 woodblock-printed books will be exhibited. (Some objects may be rotated during the exhibition period. Exhibition lineup may change as circumstances require.)

Minakata Kumagusu: An informant-savant a 100 years ahead of his time

Minakata Kumagusu is a researcher of all nature and natural history who was active during Meiji to Showa period. The exhibition will be held to commemorate his 150th birth anniversary. His gifted ability to learn language helped him to research bacteria, moss, insects and small animals in abroad. After he came back to Japan, he made an outstanding achievement to develop natural history in Japan.

Photographer Keiichi Tahara who was fascinated by the "light" and modern dancer Min Tanaka. The two artists met and decided to explore the relationship between physical light and the human body. In March 2018 the Tower of the Sun will finally be reborn after a longtime-neglected because of the problem of earthquake-resistant strength. It has been renovated and transformed into a permanent exhibition space. This exhibition will trace the fifty-year history of the tower, from 1967, when Tarō Okamoto participated as producer of Osaka's Expo 1970, until 2018 when the interior was recreated, and consider his intentions in creating the Theme Pavilion/Tower of the Sun. Highlight will be miniature three-dimensional model of the Theme Pavilion.

W. Eugene Smith is one of the greatest documentary photographers in the history of photography. This retrospective exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of W. Eugene Smith's birth. Very valuable 150 vintage prints are on exhibit thanks to the University of Arizona Center for Creative Photography in which Smith deposited his works, negatives and other resources in his lifetime.

The exhibition highlights the interactions among three tea masters in the modern era, namely: Masuda Don'o, a business-person, leader of the early-modern Japanese economic community and one of the foremost collectors of Japanese art; Yokoi Yau, a tea friend of Don'o; and Hatakeyama Sokuo. This exhibit goes beyond merely showcasing their old collections, custom-designed goods and self-produced calligraphic works, paintings and tea utensils.

Tapa and felt are early cloths made by hand employing commonly available plants or wool. Tapa and felt, it is believed, were used long before the technology for weaving was developed. This exhibition looks at the tapa and felt used in daily life since ancient times in the South Pacific islands and regions of Southeast Asia, and shows the attractiveness of tapa and felt as simple, strong non-woven cloths.

Paris at the end of the 19th century, prints that, up until that time, were just for transmitting information or a means of reproduction, became the latest medium for artists to widen the potential of expression. These artists elevated print to the level of art and created the origin of 20th century graphic art. This exhibit will bring together selected, superbly preserved works of graphic art, by Toulouse-Lautrec and other representative artists of the late 19th century.

The painter Otto Nebel's first-ever retrospective in Japan, with full backing from the Otto Nebel Foundation in Bern. The exhibition traces the themes central to Nebel's oeuvre-architecture, drama, music, the abstract, the Middle East and so on-supplementing the artist's own works with those of his contemporaries such as Klee, Kandinsky and Chagall.

Kawai Gyokudō opened up new terrain by shifting from traditional sansui to modern landscape painting in his work. To commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of his death, the Yamatane Museum of Art is examining his achievements in a retrospective exhibition. Focuses on the artist's masterpieces, including his early "Cormorant Fishing", "Red and White Plum Blossoms" from his exploratory years in search of a new style, "Autumn Rain" from his mature period, and "Weeding the Roof", which he showed when participating in the Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) for the last time.

Based on a best-selling book by Kyoko Nakano, a scholar of German literature and an art historian, the exhibition that features "Fear" comes to The Ueno Royal Museum. It focuses on some of the scariest paintings in the history of Western art: 80 pieces by mostly Victorian-era artists including pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse and illustrator Aubrey Beardsley.
