A large scale exhibition introducing and showcasing the life of artist/painter Katsushika Hokusai. Not only are the masterpieces and valued items and works assembled from Japan and overseas, but the works rediscovered in recent years will be presented as well - approximately 480 valuable works to total will be showcased. Hokusai's works from his debut work at the age of 20 years until he put down his brush at the age of 90 years, this exhibition presents spanning Hokusai's long career. Recent decades have seen a stream of catastrophes around the world - from 9.11 in 2001 to the global financial crisis of 2008, Japan's devastating quake and tsunami in 2011, and the list goes on. Catastrophe and crisis can drive us to despair, yet it is also true that the energy released as we try to recover can simultaneously spark imagination, and boost creative output. This exhibition will look at how art deals with the major catastrophes that strike communities, as well as personal tragedies, and the role art can play in our recovery. In 1925, Soetsu Yanagi first named handicrafts made by anonymous craftspeople "MINGEI," as he recognized the beauty in these everyday items used by common people. Washoku, the traditional dietary culture of the Japanese, was recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The roots of that Washoku culture line in the Edo period. During two and a half centuries of peace, agriculture and fishing made great strides, the economy grew and became more complex, and, thanks to socio-economic advancement, people achieved a level of affluence that enabled them to enjoy dining as a source of pleasure. This exhibition focuses on Hokusai's lively depictions of foods created in Edo. Hyper-realism? A word too simple to describe his works. The drawing of wire netting that stretches over 17 meters. The 365 self-portraits he drew every day for a year. The newspapers he copied, letter by letter. All of the works created by Yoshimura Yoshio are super-real, but also exude an unsettling strangeness that strikes the observer. This exhibition is the first retrospective to be held in Tokyo. It provides a comprehensive view of Yoshimura with more than 600 items on display, including monotone prints and drawings from his early period, colorful flowers from his late period, and self-portraits which he drew throughout the course of his life.
