Roppongi Art Night 2017

Place: Roppongi Hills, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo Midtown, Suntory Museum of Art, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, The National Art Center, Tokyo, and others
Over-night art festival in Roppongi "Roppongi Art Night 2017" will be held 30th of September to 1st of October. This year's theme is ‘Mirai no Matsuri’ (festivals of the future), and photographer and film director Mika Ninagawa will be the main artist of this year. In Addition, Roppongi Art Night will be launching the ‘Southeast Asia Project’ in which artists from Southeast Asia as well as Japanese artists will work together with the Roppongi community and its people to create and present art.

Kano Motonobu: All Under Heaven Bowed to His Brush

Kano Motonobu is one of the most technician in the Kano school, lived in the Muromachi period. He systemized and built upon the brushwork styles of famous Chinese artists to create three styles of paintings: shin-gyo-so, or formal, semi-formal, and informal. This exhibition will focus on Motonobu's oeuvre and the elements that enabled the Kano school, as an organization, to expand and become a powerful presence in Japanese art.

This exhibition focuses on superlative craftmanship from Meiji period to contemporary art. Amazing crafting techniques were established and widely known around the world in Meiji period, including Shippo(cloisonne), metalwork, ivory engraving, wood engraving, lacquer craft and hand-embroidered. Unique point of this exhibition is that you can compare Meiji Kogei to contemporary crafting by looking works selected by the same theme.

Photographer Keiichi Tahara who was fascinated by the "light" and modern dancer Min Tanaka. The two artists met and decided to explore the relationship between physical light and the human body. This exhibition will present 46 carefully selected photographs(all black-and-white), 41 of which were taken during the 1978 to 1980 period and 5 in the year 2016.

The exhibition highlights the interactions among three tea masters in the modern era, namely: Masuda Don'o, a business-person, leader of the early-modern Japanese economic community and one of the foremost collectors of Japanese art; Yokoi Yau, a tea friend of Don'o; and Hatakeyama Sokuo. This exhibit goes beyond merely showcasing their old collections, custom-designed goods and self-produced calligraphic works, paintings and tea utensils.

Shōen Uemura who was known for Bijinga, Paintings of Beautiful Women, was active during Meiji to Showa period. Taneji Yamazaki , founder of Yamatane Museum of Art, was good friend with him and have 18 collections of his Bijinga. This exhibition is showcasing the 18 paintings and other wide variety of Bijinga which includes Harunobu Suzuki, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka, Eisaku Wada and more.

Atsuhiko Misawa's Animal House: House of Enigmas

Atsuhiko Misawa is one of modern Japan's leading sculptors. His life-sized "animals" are carved from logs of camphor wood using a chisel or sword according to a traditional woodcarving technique. The animals appear in distinctive architectural space of the Shoto Museum of Art, with his close friends, Katsura Funakoshi, Masato Kobayashi, Hiroshi Sugito, Masashi Asada, four noted creators.

The Art of Edo Rimpa

The art of Rimpa was born in 17th century Kyoto and followed a splendid development. It is in the 19th century that Sakai Hōitsu restored Rimpa, and his student Suzuki Kiitsu added further refinement to its style. This marked the establishment of "Edo Rimpa". This exhibition will explore the appeal of Edo Rimpa that took the essences of Rimpa of Kyoto which was supported by the aristocratic style, and at the same time transformed it to an updated Edo esthetic.

Ceramic Artist TSUJI Seimei: The Beauty of Akaru Sabi

Place: The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, Crafts Gallery(1-1 Kitanomaru-koen, Chiyoda-ku)
Tsuji Seimei was a ceramic artist who worked primarily on yakishime ware (high-fired, unglazed stoneware) using clay from Shigaraki town, Shiga Prefecture. With his sense polished through his collection of antiques and exchanges He built a unique world called Akaru Sabi peculiar to Shigaraki ware. This exhibition presents Tsuji's masterpieces including vessels and objects works from his private collection.

Exhibition of the complete 46 works of Hokusai's best series work "Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji" for the first time in 7 years. The series is full of unconventional, original and striking ideas, as seen in "Mild Breeze on a Fine Day" and "Great Wave off the Coast of Kanagawa" as fine examples. In 1957, Tarō Okamoto set out on a trip in search of the true essence of Japanese culture and the first place he visited was the Tōhoku region, where he encountered "primeval Japan". Tohoku have had a "spirit of magic" in dialog with an invisible power. This experience was to decide the future direction of Tarō's art and led directly to the creation of the "Tower of the Sun".

This exhibition is a program linked to the "TADAO ANDO:ENDEAVORS" which will be held at the National Art Center, Tokyo. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT opened in 2007 with its building designed by Tadao Ando. The architect had already been discussing the future of design in Japan with Issey Miyake, the founder of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT. He was inspired by "A Piece of Cloth," which is the underlying concept of Miyake's clothes-making. This program will showcase the initial architectural ideas and sketches of the building, and part of the photos and videos of the construction sites.

Based on a best-selling book by Kyoko Nakano, a scholar of German literature and an art historian, the exhibition that features "Fear" comes to The Ueno Royal Museum. It focuses on some of the scariest paintings in the history of Western art: 80 pieces by mostly Victorian-era artists including pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse and illustrator Aubrey Beardsley.
