Kano Motonobu: All Under Heaven Bowed to His Brush

Kano Motonobu is one of the most technician in the Kano school, lived in the Muromachi period. He systemized and built upon the brushwork styles of famous Chinese artists to create three styles of paintings: shin-gyo-so, or formal, semi-formal, and informal. This exhibition will focus on Motonobu's oeuvre and the elements that enabled the Kano school, as an organization, to expand and become a powerful presence in Japanese art.

The exhibition entitled "Wild: Untamed Mind" will start October 20th by welcoming Shinichi Nakazawa, a philosopher and anthropologist, as a director. Even in the contemporary age, which tends towards logic and reason, the perceptions of the "untamed mind" are not quite lost. Nakazawa states that those parts of our mental space which have escaped taming are ever more important. This exhibition focuses on the fascinating power of the instinctive, untamed mind of contemporary creators, unveiling how to detect the "untamed mind" through their works and archives.

The ukiyo-e master of the late Edo period, Katsushika Hokusai, is an artist renowned and loved throughout the world. This exhibition will examine several aspects of Japonisme in 6 sections with the aim of showing how particular characteristics of Hokusai's art contributed to the development of modern Western art. Some 220 works of Western art and some 40 color woodblock prints and 70 woodblock-printed books will be exhibited. (Some objects may be rotated during the exhibition period. Exhibition lineup may change as circumstances require.)

Unique point of this exhibition is that you can compare Meiji Kogei to contemporary crafting by looking works selected by the same theme.

Photographer Keiichi Tahara who was fascinated by the "light" and modern dancer Min Tanaka. The two artists met and decided to explore the relationship between physical light and the human body. This exhibition will present 46 carefully selected photographs(all black-and-white), 41 of which were taken during the 1978 to 1980 period and 5 in the year 2016.

In March 2018 the Tower of the Sun will finally be reborn after a longtime-neglected because of the problem of earthquake-resistant strength. It has been renovated and transformed into a permanent exhibition space. This exhibition will trace the fifty-year history of the tower, from 1967, when Tarō Okamoto participated as producer of Osaka's Expo 1970, until 2018 when the interior was recreated, and consider his intentions in creating the Theme Pavilion/Tower of the Sun. Highlight will be miniature three-dimensional model of the Theme Pavilion.

The exhibition highlights the interactions among three tea masters in the modern era, namely: Masuda Don'o, a business-person, leader of the early-modern Japanese economic community and one of the foremost collectors of Japanese art; Yokoi Yau, a tea friend of Don'o; and Hatakeyama Sokuo. This exhibit goes beyond merely showcasing their old collections, custom-designed goods and self-produced calligraphic works, paintings and tea utensils.

Atsuhiko Misawa's Animal House: House of Enigmas

Atsuhiko Misawa is one of modern Japan's leading sculptors. His life-sized "animals" are carved from logs of camphor wood using a chisel or sword according to a traditional woodcarving technique. The animals appear in distinctive architectural space of the Shoto Museum of Art, with his close friends, Katsura Funakoshi, Masato Kobayashi, Hiroshi Sugito, Masashi Asada, four noted creators.

The Art of Edo Rimpa

The art of Rimpa was born in 17th century Kyoto and followed a splendid development. It is in the 19th century that Sakai Hōitsu restored Rimpa, and his student Suzuki Kiitsu added further refinement to its style. This marked the establishment of "Edo Rimpa". This exhibition will explore the appeal of Edo Rimpa that took the essences of Rimpa of Kyoto which was supported by the aristocratic style, and at the same time transformed it to an updated Edo esthetic.

Ceramic Artist TSUJI Seimei: The Beauty of Akaru Sabi

Tsuji Seimei was a ceramic artist who worked primarily on yakishime ware (high-fired, unglazed stoneware) using clay from Shigaraki town, Shiga Prefecture. With his sense polished through his collection of antiques and exchanges He built a unique world called Akaru Sabi peculiar to Shigaraki ware. This exhibition presents Tsuji's masterpieces including vessels and objects works from his private collection.

This exhibition is a program linked to the "TADAO ANDO:ENDEAVORS" which will be held at the National Art Center, Tokyo. 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT opened in 2007 with its building designed by Tadao Ando. The architect had already been discussing the future of design in Japan with Issey Miyake, the founder of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT. He was inspired by "A Piece of Cloth," which is the underlying concept of Miyake's clothes-making. This program will showcase the initial architectural ideas and sketches of the building, and part of the photos and videos of the construction sites.

Modeled on the Japanese certification of "Living National Treasure", the French equvalent, called "Maitre d' Art" was established in 1994. This is the first exhibiiton of its kind in the world introducing one artist from each of the fifteen fields, including ceramics, glass, leather, tortoiseshell, feather, umbrellas, fans and wallpaper. Experience the outstanding French craftmanship and tradition.

Paris at the end of the 19th century, prints that, up until that time, were just for transmitting information or a means of reproduction, became the latest medium for artists to widen the potential of expression. These artists elevated print to the level of art and created the origin of 20th century graphic art. This exhibit will bring together selected, superbly preserved works of graphic art, by Toulouse-Lautrec and other representative artists of the late 19th century.

Marc Chagall is famous as a painter and engraver but it is not widely known that in his later years he created many sculptures. This is the first exhibition in Japan to offer an in-depth look at his sculptures. Based on the distinctive traits of Chagall's sculptures, which have a deep connection with his two-dimensional works, displaying his sculptures along with related sketches and paintings based on the same themes.

For the late 19th century artist Vincent van Gogh, Japonism was a huge influence to create his one and only paintings. This joint exhibition with the Van Gogh Museum presents Van Gogh oil paintings and sketches from the collections of prestigious museums of the world together with woodblock prints and materials connected with the Auvers pilgrimage to present the allure of Van Gogh through the medium of intersecting dreams.

The painter Otto Nebel's first-ever retrospective in Japan, with full backing from the Otto Nebel Foundation in Bern. The exhibition traces the themes central to Nebel's oeuvre-architecture, drama, music, the abstract, the Middle East and so on-supplementing the artist's own works with those of his contemporaries such as Klee, Kandinsky and Chagall.

Windsor chairs, whose parts including seat and back are all made of wood, were highly admired by Japanese people. In this exhibition, excellent works of British Windsor chairs in Japan now as well as many pieces of wooden furniture are exhibited. It shows you the beauty of crafts produced from natural materials with certain technique.

Kawai Gyokudō opened up new terrain by shifting from traditional sansui to modern landscape painting in his work. To commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of his death, the Yamatane Museum of Art is examining his achievements in a retrospective exhibition. Focuses on the artist's masterpieces, including his early "Cormorant Fishing", "Red and White Plum Blossoms" from his exploratory years in search of a new style, "Autumn Rain" from his mature period, and "Weeding the Roof", which he showed when participating in the Nitten (Japan Fine Arts Exhibition) for the last time.

Based on a best-selling book by Kyoko Nakano, a scholar of German literature and an art historian, the exhibition that features "Fear" comes to The Ueno Royal Museum. It focuses on some of the scariest paintings in the history of Western art: 80 pieces by mostly Victorian-era artists including pre-Raphaelite painter John William Waterhouse and illustrator Aubrey Beardsley.
